Our entire lives, we are told that if we brush our teeth twice a day, floss, and rinse our mouths with mouthwash, we will have perfect, healthy, sparkly teeth.

As a licensed dental professional, I’m here to tell you that’s simply not enough.

Don’t get me wrong. I strongly encourage all of my patients to brush 2 (or even 3!) times a dayand to stay on top of their at-home dental care routine.

I promise, if you follow a consistent teeth cleaning routine, your teeth will certainly thank you down the road.

However, it’s vital to your oral health that you also schedule an appointment to have your teeth cleaned by professionals every six months.

Here’s why…

Why At-Home Dental Care Isn’t Enough

There are many reasons at-home dental care isn’t enough.

For starters, most people simply don’t have the tools at home (like high-powered water picks and scrapers) that dental hygienists use to keep patients’ teeth clean.

Most of these special tools require training to use, so the likelihood of you ever using them in your home is slim.

On top of that, dentists also have access to very important dental care treatments like fluoride treatments, sealants, and medications that help teeth and gums.

If you fail to go to your bi-yearly teeth cleaning appointment, you’re missing out on the opportunity to better protect your teeth and prevent harmful diseases and other assorted problems.

And last, but certainly not least, the honest truth is that most people don’t know how to correctly brush their teeth.

Brushing your teeth might not sound like rocket science, but there are special brushing techniques you need to consider while polishing your pearly whites. And these techniques can be especially challenging for small children.

What are you potentially doing wrong? It could be several things…

First of all, how long do you brush your teeth? 30 seconds…a minute?

In my professional opinion, it should take at least 2 solid minutes for you scrub every surface of your teeth along with your tongue.

Fun Fact: Your tongue is a breeding ground for bacteria. It’s a surface you need to pay extra attention to while brushing your teeth.

Second, are you really paying close enough attention to ensure you are scrubbing every crevice of every single tooth?

This is not a criticism.

It’s honestly just impossible to clean every surface without someone helping you.

Think about it…even dental hygienists need special lighting, mirrors, and tools to clean your entire mouth. It’s a big job!

And finally, think about the last time you replaced your toothbrush.

At the very least, toothbrushes should be replaced every 6 months. That being said, every 3 months is probably better as toothbrush bristles can easily wear out. And once your bristles wear out, they don’t clean teeth as effectively.

There you have it…by no fault of your own, it’s clear that it’s nearly impossible to take perfect care of your teeth on your own.

That’s why it’s so awesome that there are trained dental hygienists across the country that are trained and ready to help keep your pearly whites protected from a variety of teeth and gum health problems.

What common problems can routine cleaning prevent? Check it out…

Common Dental Problems That Can Be Prevented with Routine Teeth Cleanings

Decades ago, the average human only lived into their 40s–if they were lucky!

But today, thanks to modern science, we are able to live much longer.

For us, that’s wonderful! But, for our teeth, it’s not so great.

The truth is that our teeth weren’t designed to last 100 years. And that’s why you’ll see older people (80+) with dentures and false teeth, regardless of how well they cared for their chompers in the past.

But here’s the good news…

When dental professionals are able to catch small dental problems early, your chances of keeping your teeth healthy well into your golden years increase significantly.

Here are a few problems routine dental visits can screen for before they become a massive issue…

Cavities–Unless your diet consists of only water and unseasoned fish, you’re at risk for developing cavities. Not only can routine cleanings help prevent cavities, they can also help dentists spot small cavities before they become a big problem.

Gingivitis–Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. Dentists can detect gingivitis by examining your gums for red patches and swollen spots. If not detected early, gingivitis can turn into full-blown gum disease, which may cause your teeth to fall out.

Cancer–Believe it or not, during routine teeth cleanings, hygienists are trained to look for signs of oral cancer. Early detection is key to ensuring you make a full recovery.
