Imagine if you could go to the dentist, experience total comfort, and feel as if you’re 100% in control.

Better yet, think about how relaxed and stress-free you’d feel about walking into your appointment and knowing that you won’t have to feel any discomfort–regardless of what type of procedure you’re getting done.

Sounds like a dream, right?

For those of you who fear going to the dentist, your answer is probably “yes.”

However, for those of you who have visited dentists who are up to speed on how to keep their patients relaxed and comfortable using medications, you know firsthand how enjoyable a dentist appointment can actually be.

At Smile Max 365, we believe that our patients shouldn’t have to fear going to the dentist. Which is why we offer several different ways to help patients relax and feel comfortable during their visits with us.

Here are just a few of the ways modern dentists are able to give their patients a 100% comfortable and non-scary dental experience.

Check it out…

Laughing Gas (nitrous oxide)

Nitrous oxide, or what you might more commonly know as laughing gas, is one of the most popular forms of dental sedation.

And believe it or not, it’s called laughing gas because it’s known to make patients feel so relaxed and comfortable that they may begin to giggle!

It’s a preferred method of sedation–especially for small children–because it is extremely safe and effective and doesn’t require the use of injections or needles.

Laughing gas is administered through a mask that’s placed over your nose. All you have to do is breath normally to ingest the gas.

The best part…the effects of laughing gas only last a very short while after your mask is removed.

Most kids are fine to go to school after a dental appointment where laughing gas is administered, and most adults should be more than ok to drive within a half hour of ingesting it.

Oral Sedation (Halcion)

For minimal oral sedation, you are generally given a pill to take.

Typically, the pill is made of Halcion, a medication that is a member of the same drug family as Valium.

However, oral sedation medications do vary, so be sure to have a conversation with your dentist before he or she prescribes you an oral sedative.

The best part of this type of sedation is that you usually take it a half hour or so before your appointment begins.

This means you can get rid of your dental visit jitters before you get to the dentist office.

Oral sedation medication will make you drowsy, although you should stay conscious and awake through your appointment.

The main goal of taking the pill is to help ease any anxiety you may feel about your appointment.

Because this type of medication will make you sleepy, it’s important that you have a family member or friend available to drive you to and from your appointment.

When prescribed and taken in the right dosage, oral sedation is just about as safe as laughing gas.

That being said, the recovery time is a bit longer as the medication has to work itself out of your system.

If you’re using oral sedation, you might want to block off a few hours after your appointment to rest and take a nap while the medication leaves your system.

Intravenous Sedation Dentistry (anesthesia)

If you’re someone who needs dental work done, but doesn’t want to remember one tiny detail of your appointment, intravenous sedation dentistry might be for you!

After all, why not get in a good 45-minute nap while you’re getting your dental work done?

There are several levels of intravenous sedation methods including…

  • Minimal sedation–you are awake but relaxed.
  • Moderate sedation–you are “out of it” to the extent you may not remember much of your dental visit.
  • Deep sedation–you are on the edge of consciousness but can easily be awakened.
  • General anesthesia–you are completely unconscious/asleep.

Intravenous sedation medications are administered through IVs directly to your blood stream. This ensures they work fast and effectively.

This sedation method does carry the most amount of risk due to the strength of the medications being used. However, intravenous sedation is used every day on adults and kids, and it’s extremely rare that something goes wrong.

It’s very important that you talk with your dentist about using this type of sedation if he/she offers it. Your dentist will need to know your medical history to ensure this is a safe option for you.

At Smile Max 365, we offer several options to ensure you will have a comfortable, relaxing, and stress-free dental visit.
