Wouldn’t it be amazing to never feel discomfort or sensitivity in your teeth again?

Imagine being able to eat ice cream without experiencing discomfort due to cold sensitivities.

Or biting into a delicious apple without having to worry about bite pressure or which side of your mouth you chew on.

Believe it or not, millions of people are walking around every day with tooth sensitivities that could easily be taken care of with a routine dental procedure known as a root canal.

What is a root canal, how do you know if you need one, and how does it work?

Keep reading to find out…

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a very common procedure that is used to get rid of tooth discomfort and other sensitivities.

In fact, Dental Facts states that over 15 million people get root canals every year in the United States.

The procedure is quick, painless (thanks to modern medications and numbing agents), and, most importantly, safe.

Both adults and children can have a root canal performed. However, it’s more common for an adult who has had multiple cavities, infection, or other tooth trauma (like a cracked tooth) to undergo the procedure.

How Do You Know If You Need a Root Canal?

If you experience tooth pain without cause and are sensitive to hot or cold foods and/or beverages, it’s a good sign that you might need a root canal.

There are some people that simply have sensitive teeth.

If using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth doesn’t relieve your pain, you will most likely need a root canal to permanently get rid of the discomfort.

Another good way to gage whether you might need a root canal is to think about your dental history…

  • Have you ever cracked a tooth?
  • Do you have multiple feelings in the same tooth?
  • Has any other trauma occurred to your mouth that might be causing your permanent pain?

If your answer is yes to any of these questions and you’re experiencing persistent discomfort, it’s possible that a root canal might be what you need to find relief.

The best way to know for sure is to schedule a visit with your dentist.

He/she should be able to examine the tooth that is causing your problems and determine if a root canal is the answer to putting an end to your issues.

How Does a Root Canal Work?

Inside your tooth is a soft tissue called pulp.

This tissue contains blood vessels and nerves which help grow the root of your tooth during its development.

When a tooth is cracked or unhealthy or experiences some sort of trauma, this pulp can easily become inflamed and sensitive.

This is what causes the extreme discomfort when biting into something hard or chewy or sensitivity when eating or drinking something that’s hot or cold.

During a root canal, a dentist will remove the inside of your tooth, clean it, and then fill it with a rubber material to keep it protected.

Then, the tooth with be restored with a crown or filling to protect the rubber substance.

Because the nerves and vessels have been removed from the tooth, it is now impossible to feel pain, and your discomfort should be relieved for good.
